New eco-friendly RITI printer runs on coffee or tea dregs instead of ink.

Coffee-drinking computer users may soon have a new use for their old coffee grinds if a new eco-friendly printer hits the market.

Featured in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition, the RITI printer apparently uses coffee or tea dregs to create computer printouts.

To use the printer just insert a piece of paper, place used coffee or tea grinds into the ink case on the top of the printer, then move the ink case left and right to print the image — no electricity needed, Greener Gadgets reported.

CHS broke the news a few weeks back that Starbucks was set to open yet another ‘neighborhood coffee house’ in the 700 Broadway building.

Now we know what they plan to call the joint. Starbucks passed along this internal memo detailing some of the strategy around the next of their concept shops to hit Capitol Hill.

Hey Joe Bar, meet your new neighbor Roy Street Coffee & Tea.

This fall, history will be made in Maine. On Sept. 25, 26 and 27, the Common Ground Country Fair, the largest organic farming and gardening event in the country, will open its gates to a projected 60,000 visitors, and coffee will be for sale. For years the fair prohibited the sale of coffee, tea and chocolate, not, as I once thought, for health reasons, but because of a belief in promoting local food.

The rule was that all foodstuffs sold had to contain a certain percentage of Maine-grown ingredients. Naturally, an enterprising character who called himself the Coffee Man set up shop just outside the gate, so attendees could stream in with their cups of joe. Now coffee is legit inside, as long as it’s fairly traded and grown under shade.

NIFTY GADGET: Fisticups finally combines coffee mugs with violent weapons

Coffees, Tea

______________

Where violence has no place . . . unless you want it to!

______________

Are you aggressive in the morning? Do you wake up ready to literally attack the day? Like, with your fists? Well, this Fisticup was designed with you and your penchant for violence in mind.

Essentially, it’s a coffee mug with brass knuckles built in. It’ll make you feel like you’re really powerful while you sip your coffee, and can easily be used to punch someone in the face and do a lot of damage. If that’s what you’re into. Maybe your money would be better spent on anger management therapy? Just a thought.

Musical Kettle plays your song when water boils

Tea

Our tea will sing to you!

__________

Normally, when a kettle lets you know your water is boiling you’ll hear a high pitched whistle. It’s annoying, so you turn it off quickly. It’s worked pretty well for a while now.

But Naoki Kawamoto’s Musical Kettle turns that annoying whistle into song by putting a sort of flute at the spout. Instead of one high-pitched whistle, you get the song of your choice. But you should still turn the stove off right when it goes off. Just ignore the song, if you can.

More than 800 tea pickers have been sent home after a multinational company in Kenya introduced tea picking machines.

The workers of the Eastern Produce Tea Company in Nandi were ordered to vacate company houses immediately and those defying the directive were warned that they would be arrested and charged with trespass.

The company’s decision protests from the Kenya Plantation and Agriculture Workers Union (KPAWU).

National treasurer Joshua Oyuga asked President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to intervene and save the tea pickers’ jobs.

SAN FRANCISCO — As the recession wears on and fewer people are splurging at Starbucks, the coffee chain’s response is to raise prices. On Thursday, Starbucks stores in several cities started charging up to 30 cents more for some specialty beverages, though the company is charging less for some basic drinks.

The price adjustments will be made at stores nationwide in coming months.

The move comes as Starbucks toes a tricky line between remaining a premium brand while retaining price-sensitive customers who can buy cheaper coffee at other shops. This summer, Starbucks has been fending off competition from McDonald’s, which has introduced a new line of lower-priced espresso drinks that have proved popular.

A tall glass of fresh-brewed iced tea does more than cool you off on a sultry summer day. Tea is the world’s second most popular libation (right after good old H2O). In fact, the U.S. guzzles more than 55 billion cups a year.

No wonder: In addition to tasting great, tea also can fight disease and help you slim down. The latest news on tea may be one of its best attributes yet: its ability to improve mental focus and clarity.

Tea is nature’s major source of the amino acid L-theanine. When paired with caffeine, this wonder compound decreases alpha wave activity in your brain and increases focus. In fact, downing two to three cups of tea within an hour or two of each other (the amino acid goes to work within 30 minutes) has been shown to make people more alert and focused. One more upside: You won’t get that jittery feeling you do from other caffeinated drinks.

The winner of this year’s World Kitchen Tea-Off is the Vessel One. This majestic contraption shouts to the ’80s generation of gamers and tea lovers alike.

The pot is white at room temperature. Fill it with water, and place the pot (sans trivet, of course) on the stove. When the water has heated up to the perfect temperature, the invaders appear and  begin to take over the pot. (If you don’t take it off in time, they kill you, so no more worrying about when the water is done).
